In 1989 he started playing drumset with his Jr. High jazz band. Since then he has gone on to perform in a variety of rock bands, jazz combos, big bands, show bands, dance bands, symphonies, percussion ensembles, and musicals. This includes experience in rock, funk, R&B, Motown, blues, reggae, swing, fusion, be-bop, and various Latin American, Central American, and African styles.

Orchestral Percussion

This is one of the foundations of his percussion history. At the age of 13 he started playing drums/percussion in Middle School band. Throughout the years he has performed in symphonies, orchestras, percussion ensembles, wind ensembles, brass choirs, musicals, and various chamber groups. He has held positions such as section leader, principal percussionist, and/or principal timpanist in some of these ensembles.

Marching Drums & Percussion

Throughout high school and college he participated in marching band which included performing at football games, parades, and regional competitions. He was also involved with the highly competitive “indoor” marching drumline circuit. This included performances at local competitions as well as Percussive Arts Society International Convention for international recognition. He has performed on snare drum, tenors (quads & quints), cymbals, and the PIT (sideline percussion). He has held the position of section leader in some of these groups.

Hand Drums

During college, while studying styles from other countries, he began studying and performing on a variety of hand drums and “ethnic” percussion. Over the years he has studied percussion instruments from North America, South America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. He has performed on these instruments in percussion ensembles, orchestras, musicals, big bands, various chamber groups, and countless accompaniment positions.

Noted groups while attending Jacksonville State University: Percussion Ensemble, Jacksonville Percussion Quartet, Mallet Ensemble, Mallet Quartet, Pop Ensemble, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Pep Band, Hardcorps, Jax Pan, Brass Choir, “Indoor” drumline, and the “Marching Southerners” marching band.

Noted groups throughout his career: Harmonic Grey, Mojo, Quenchable Quid, The Freeloaders, Hodgepodge Orchestra, Highly Kind, Swingin’ Richards, Mart Avant’s Night Flight Big Band, Roman Brass, Rome Symphony (Rome, GA), Gadsden Theater Company, Gadsden Symphony (Gadsden, AL), Birmingham Winds Ensemble, Sapien “Whole World Music,” Everybody’s Girl, and Carnival Cruise Lines.
