Alan started playing drums and percussion in June of 1988, while growing up outside of Birmingham, Alabama. He spent his first 6 years in music studying band & orchestral percussion, as well as marching percussion. This included participation in percussion ensembles, jazz bands, marching bands, marching drumlines, wind ensembles, concert bands, and various honor-band programs such as All-County, All-State, and local University programs. Outside of his formal education, he was constantly performing with local rock/pop bands and theater companies, while also teaching private lessons to younger musicians.
In 1994 he moved to Jacksonville, Alabama to continue his experience in music, as well as further his education. While attending classes at Jacksonville State University, he continued to perform with any type of group using drums or percussion, and taught at various schools around the Southeastern United States as a freelance drum instructor. As a performer he toured with a local rock group, began playing
In 2002 he moved back to Birmingham to help open a new store specializing in musical instruments and catered to high school band programs. During this time he continued to teach and perform in a variety of groups, but also started learning the industry of Music Business. He was a salesman on all instruments, but he also used this opportunity to enhance his skills as a percussion technician and repairman. Now he had studied the world of percussion inside and out.
Going back to the original roots of his career, in 2004 he started exclusively practicing and performing again. He continues to play with a variety of groups in the Birmingham area, but also does contract work throughout the United States and internationally.
